Highlights of Hamanaka - 7. Kiritappu Misaki Scenic Viewpoint
霧多布岬
Cape Kiritappu, formally named Cape Tofutsu, is also known as Cape Tokkari because of frequent seal sightings (or “tokkari” in the language of the indigenous Ainu people).
The cape, standing 40 to 60 meters above sea level, is located at the eastern edge of the table-shaped Kiritappu Peninsula and protrudes into the rough waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is a great place for relaxation, and is in close proximity to a scenic viewpoint and a campground.
The scenic viewpoint provides sweeping views of Hokakeiwa Rock (a rock three kilometers away in the ocean where seals can be seen), the Ponporoto area across Hamanaka Bay, steep cliffs in the Moraito area, and beautiful shorelines.
A local folk tale titled “A Poem on Cape Tokkari” has been passed down for many generations, recounting how seals came to be found in the area.
