Highlights of Hamanaka - 4. Kenbokki Island

瞼暮帰島

This uninhabited island with a circumference of approximately 4.5 kilometers is located near Biwase Bay facing the Pacific Ocean and can be seen from Cape Azechi and the coastal areas.
Like Kiritappu Wetland, the island in summer is filled with many flowers, including day lilies and Arctic irises.
It is also known as a treasure trove of precious plants and animals, providing habitats to Ezo least shrews (one of the smallest mammals in the world) and Leach’s storm petrels.
Since the island remains unspoiled, the Hamanaka Town Office has set conditions for access to the island to ensure the proper balance of protection and utilization of the natural environment.
