Highlights of Hamanaka - 1. Tateiwa Rock and Cape Namida

Cape Namida
Cape Namida

Cape Namida (meaning “tears”) and Tateiwa Rock are named based on a story often talked about among elderly locals – a love story involving the daughter of a fishermen’s boss and a young fisherman. Long ago, a ship carrying the young fisherman was wrecked in a storm, causing him to perish at sea. His lover, grieving in tears at the cape, transformed into a rock. According to legend, her sobs can still be heard on stormy nights. Therefore, this place is also known as “the tears of a young girl.” The rocky cliff standing several dozen meters high looks like the profile of the young girl, stirring the hearts of travelers.
